Doris Marten

Doris Marten lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.
Sie wurde 1971 in München geboren. Nachdem Sie 1992 eine Ausbildung zur Trickfilmzeichnerin bei Curt Linda-Film in München absolvierte, studierte sie bis 1998 an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Nürnberg in der Klasse Rolf-Gunter Dienst Malerei, Grafik und Objektkunst. 1997 belegte Sie zusätzlich das Fach Malerei an der Universität der Künste in Berlin in der Klasse Kuno Gonschior.
1998 schloss Sie als Meisterschülerin das Studium ab.

Doris Marten arbeitet konsequent an zwei Serien.
“GUIDED BY THE LINE” - Die waagerecht und senkrecht gehaltenen Streifenintervalle laufen über die Bildfläche und verweben sich zu einem Pattern. Sie bilden den Rahmen für die Arbeit von Doris Marten und sind auch ein Symbol für die immanente Vielfalt.

“SOUND AND VISION” - In dieser Serie verlässt sie die strenge der Form. Hier konzentriert sie sich auf die Wirkung von Form und Farbe. Der Grundimpuls für jedes ihrer Bilder ist eine bestimmte Farbidee aus der eine gewisse Stimmung hervorgeht. Diese Farbstimmung bildet im besten Falle eine Analogie zu einem imaginäreren Klang und Rhythmus.

Der Beginn des Arbeitsprozesses liegt also in der Wahl der Farben, die einer Klangvorstellung entsprechen, und ihrer anschließenden Anordnung und Abfolge auf der Bildfläche. So soll der gewünschte Rhythmus sichtbar werden. Besonders betont wird der Bezug zur Musik, da die Künstlerin Schallplatten als Bildträger verwendet. Der Tonträger erfährt durch die Malerei eine Transformation und vermittelt dann visuelle Informationen anstelle der früheren akustischen Informationen. Ist ein Bild fertig, malt die Künstlerin das nächste, mit der gleichen Palette, aber einer anderen Farbfolge, anderen Intervallen, anderen Verläufen oder Kontrasten. So entsteht ein ständig wachsender Pool von Rundbildern, jedes ein in sich stimmiges Einzelkunstwerk mit einem individuellen Klang in Farbe und einem ganz eigenen Rhythmus.

Gerade bei den Installationen spielt die Idee der Komposition eine zentrale Rolle. Je nach Raumsituation und Atmosphäre werden die Platten nach ihrer Farbigkeit und Ausstrahlung ausgewählt und angeordnet. In einer regelmäßigen oder auch amorphen Anordnung fügen sie sich zu einem Gesamtbild zusammen, das sich auf die spezifischen Gegebenheiten des jeweiligen Ortes bezieht.

Doris Marten lives and works in Berlin. She was born in Munich in 1971. After training as an animator at Curt Linda-Film in Munich in 1992, she studied painting, graphics and object art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg in the class of Rolf-Gunter Dienst until 1998. From 1997 she also studied painting at the University of the Arts in Berlin in the class of Kuno Gonschior. In 1998 she completed her studies as a master student.

Doris Marten works continuously on two series. "GUIDED BY THE LINE" - intervals of horizontal and vertical stripes run across the picture surface and interweave to form a pattern. They form the framework for Doris Marten's work and are at the same time a symbol for the immanent diversity.

"SOUND AND VISION" - In this series she abandons the strictness of form. Here she concentrates on the effect of form and colour. The basic impulse for each of her paintings is a certain colour idea, from which a certain mood results. In the best case, this colour mood forms an analogy to a more imaginary sound and rhythm. The beginning of the working process therefore lies in the selection of colours that correspond to an idea of sound and their subsequent arrangement and sequence on the picture surface. In this way, the desired rhythm is to become visible.

The reference to music is particularly emphasised because the artist uses records as image carriers. The sound carrier undergoes a transformation through painting and then conveys visual information instead of the earlier acoustic information. When one painting is finished, the artist paints the next, using the same palette but a different colour sequence, different distances, different gradients or contrasts. This creates a constantly growing pool of circular paintings, each a coherent individual work of art with its own individual colour tone and rhythm.

Especially in the installations, the idea of composition plays a central role. Depending on the room situation and atmosphere, the panels are selected and arranged according to their colourfulness and radiance. In a regular or even amorphous arrangement, they come together to form an overall picture that relates to the specific conditions of the respective location.
